채정룡 교수, 세계조정선수권 유치 일등공신

2013년 충주 개최, 한국대표 맹활약

“제가 대한조정협회 부회장으로 역임하는 동안 조정 월드컵이라 할 수 있는 세계조정선수권대회를 한국에서 개최하게돼 뿌듯합니다”라고 말하는 채정룡(56) 군산대학교 교수.

최근 확정된 2013년 충주세계조정선수권대회 유치추진위원회 한국대표로 활동한 채 교수는 일본에 이어 아시아에선 두 번째로 한국 개최를 위해 전방위 활약을 펼치면서 결국 유치를 이끌어냈다.

채정룡 교수는 “세계조정선수권대회는 축구 월드컵과 세계육상대회를 포함 빅3 스포츠 종목으로 유럽 등지에선 각광을 받고 있지만 아시아에선 비인기종목으로 평가받고 있다”며, “이번 세계조정선수권대회를 통해 한국이 세계 조정의 메카가 됐으면 하는 바람”이라고 전했다.

이번 대회 유치를 통해 그는 2년전부터 유치추진위원회 위원 겸 한국대표로 활동하면서 남아프리카공화국을 비롯 체코, 독일, 영국 등 세계 각지를 누비면서 세계조정연맹을 상대로 적극적인 유치활동을 벌여왔다.

한국을 비롯 네델란드, 독일 등 3개국이 유치 의사를 밝힌 2013년 세계조정선수권대회는 전 세계 127개국 회원국 중 80여 개국 선수단 2,000여 명을 비롯 5천여명이 참가하는 세계최대 규모 조정대회이다.

채 교수는 “지난달 세계조정연맹 정기총회 이사회에서 충주개최안을 상정했으나 독일에서 투표를 건의하는 돌발상황이 발생하는 등 우여곡절이 많았다”며, “이번 대회를 통해 한국 조정 경기력이 향상되고 나아가 조정도 활성화됐으면 한다”고 밝혔다.

한편 2013년 충주 세계조정선수권대회는 8월경 8박9일 일정으로 개최되며, 남녀 7개 종목에 걸쳐 14개의 금메달을 놓고 전세계 선수단이 격돌을 벌이게 된다.
